Academic Affairs

 
Faculty Promotion and Tenure
  • Supervision and administration of the Appointments, Promotion and Tenure process.
  • Presiding over all faculty Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure meetings.
  • Presiding over meetings of the Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure Committee.
  • Confirming and validating all faculty votes regarding Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure recommendations.
  • Communicate to the Department Chair in writing the recommendations of the faculty regarding Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure decisions.
  • Notify members of faculty under review of the comments and recommendations of the eligible faculty. The Vice Chair will meet with probationary faculty to discuss faculty discussion of mandatory reviews and outline achievements and areas for improvement.
  • Meet with all new faculty to review faculty tracks and the Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure procedures.
  • Meet with faculty considering promotion to discuss appropriate timing and likely success of application.
  • Participate in the faculty annual review process by assisting the division-specific Vice-Chairs and the Chair with the content of the annual review letter, ultimately ensuring that the letter meets or exceeds the standards set forth by the College of Medicine.
  • Assisting the Chair in his/her role in revising, as appropriate, the departmental Appointments, Promotion and Tenure document as well as its Patterns of Administration.
Faculty Development
  • Works collaboratively with senior faculty mentors to assist faculty with regards to their career development in order to enhance their effectiveness as clinicians, educators and researchers, where applicable and assist in the development of a peer evaluation process for all assistant and associate professors.
    • Assist each faculty member in establishing an individual faculty development and mentoring plan.
    • Develop a 5 year career plan for each faculty member.
  • Serve as the Departmental Liaison to the Center for Faculty Advancement, Mentoring and Engagement (FAME).
Faculty Recruitment
  • Participates in all faculty searches and assure that equal consideration has been given to candidates from outside institutions, from a diversity of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and that both male and female candidates have been considered.
Other Duties
  • Serve on the following Departmental Committees:
    • Departmental Executive Committee
    • Emergency Medicine LLC Board of Managers
  • Responsible for completing annual performance reviews for junior faculty as assigned by the Chair of the Department.
  • Responsible for serving as a mentor/coach for junior faculty as assigned by the Chair of the Department.

Clinical Affairs

 
Clinical Operations
  • The VCCA will provide oversight and leadership for clinical services provided under the auspices of the Department of Emergency Medicine. This is inclusive of services provided in the OSU Main and East Emergency Departments, the Clinical Decision Unit, Hyperbaric Medicine, the After Hours Clinic at Martha Morehouse, Ultrasound services, Physician Advisor Program, and all others not specifically enumerated above.
  • The VCCA will help provide oversight of the Department's Mid-Level Provider Program.
  • The VCCA will be responsible for assisting the Chair in the review of suitability for initial credentialing on the Medical Staff as well as ongoing professional evaluation (OPPE) of clinical competency for all of the Department's Faculty and Mid-Level Providers.
  • The VCCA will assist the Chair and Medical Directors in ensuring adequate Physician and Mid-Level Provider staffing resources for the clinical mission.
Ohio State University Emergency Medicine, LLC
  • The VCCA will serve as a voting member of the LLC Board of Directors.
  • The VCCA will have financial signatory authority to authorize expenditures for the LLC.
  • The VCCA will work with the Chair and Department Administrator to ethically maximize professional revenue for the Department and to assist in the education of all Department providers regarding coding, documentation and compliance.
Annual Review Process/Mentor/Coach
  • The VCCA will be responsible for completing annual performance reviews for junior Faculty as assigned by the Chair of the Department.
  • The VCCA will be responsible for serving as a mentor/coach for junior Faculty as assigned by the Chair of the Department or the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs.

Education

 
Oversee all education programs of the department including but not limited to fellowship and residency training programs, undergraduate education programs including EM electives, DOC1, ATEM and Honors Ultrasound rotations and further development of advanced competencies and advanced electives pertaining to EM. This oversight should include plans for the upcoming year and a 5 year plan which includes the Vice Chair's vision for the department.
  • Meet at least annually with directors of all education programs including GME directors (fellowship directors, residency directors (EM and EM/IM), UGE directors (DOC1, ATEM, EM electives and Honors Ultrasound).
  • Submit an annual written assessment with feedback to each education director and to the department Chair based on reports (SWOT) from the education leaders mentioned in I.A.
  • Develop an annual report for publication on our website that depicts positive progress and success in education during the previous academic year.
  • Meet with education program directors whenever needed to facilitate program development opportunities and to overcome obstacles that may arise in the various education programs.
Faculty development as educators
  • Work with the Chair and the Vice Chair of Academic affairs regarding development of individual faculty development and mentoring plans
  • Mentoring
    • Work with the Chair and the Vice Chair of Academic Affairs to develop a mentoring network that involves all faculty members.
    • Provide individual mentoring for faculty members with education performance difficulties.
  • Work with the Chair and the Vice Chair of Academic Affairs to advise and to facilitate considerations for promotions in rank.
  • Meet with new faculty to facilitate orientation to departmental faculty roles with respect to our department education mission.
Work collaboratively with the Vice Chair of Research to promote educational research and scholarship. Oversee the administrative support of all education programs
  • Work with the Chair to determine the distribution of staff support of the various education programs to ensure that all education programs are well supported.
  • Work with departmental administrative leadership to ensure that administrative staff performance fulfills education program needs while maximizing staff job satisfaction.
Participate in the oversight of the education finances and budget
  • Work with administrative leadership including the Chair and the finance committee to determine the total departmental education budget, the funding sources and the ongoing education expenditures.
  • Work with the Chair and administrative leadership to review and approve additional education budgetary requests by faculty.
  • Develop a strategy to increase the education budget.
Participate on departmental committees critical to the education mission
  • Attend Monthly Faculty Meetings
  • Attend Executive Committee Meetings
  • Attend Monthly EM LLC Board of Directors Meetings
  • Attend Monthly Recruitment Committee Meetings
  • Attend GME and UGE education committees (meet at least semiannually)
  • Attend Monthly Educator Track Meetings (monthly)
  • Attend Monthly Research Committee Meetings
  • Attend P and T Committee Meetings
Leadership development and succession
  • Attend COM, OSUWMC, regional or national meetings aimed at leadership development. (at least one meeting per year)
  • Leadership development activities should include director/leaders of educational programs.
  • Leadership succession planning should include recommendations to the Chair where potential leaders are identified to lead our education program in the event that a current program leader can no longer lead that program.

Research

 
  • Coordinate department research efforts and increase publications and grants (10% vs prior year).
  • Organize department research faculty in regular monthly faculty research meetings.
  • Research reports and updates; maintain web and bulletin board.
  • Oversee research budgets including SIG program with approval from Chair of Emergency Medicine.
  • Mentor junior faculty researchers - at least 4 identifiable.
  • Conduct annual reviews and follow up with research track and tenure faculty.
  • Support of others' grants in various functions (consultant, mentor, supervisor).
  • Supervise research personnel (non-faculty).
  • Interface with other departments desiring to conduct studies in the ED with Dr. Caterino.
  • Conduct own research program
    • Write grants, research manuscripts
    • Make research presentations at national meetings
  • Participate in peer review activities (eg manuscript review for journals, grant reviews for NIH, AHA, etc).
  • Mentor graduate students and/or research fellows
  • Recruitment of research fellows and faculty to our department's research efforts together with Chair.
  • Involvement in college research activities (eg OSUMC Trainee Research Day).
  • Work with Chair, other Vice-Chairs regarding faculty development, coaching and mentoring
  • Participate in the faculty annual review process under the direction of the Chair
  • Serve on the following departmental committees:
    • Departmental Search Committee
    • Departmental Executive Committee
    • Departmental P&T Committee
