Worker's Compensation: Worker's Compensation
is prepaid providing 100 percent of all medical expenses and for a percentage of wage loss, which results from job-related injuries or occupational diseases.
Some staff members receive prepaid long-term disability
income insurance with benefits of half of their annual stipend in case of total disability lasting beyond 90 days.
Some staff members are automatically entitled to prepaid term life insurance
in the amount of 2 1/2 times their annual stipend, plus accidental death and dismemberment benefits. Optional dependent group life plans are available for spouses, or same-sex domestic partners (separate affidavit required) and dependent children. A variety of plans with varying premiums and limits of coverage are available.
Retirement benefits are provided through the State of Ohio Teachers Retirement System (STRS)
or through one of the Alternative Retirement Program (ARP)
plans available. Contribution rates can vary from year to year based on program policies.
The University administers a self-indemnification insurance program. As a resident, you are covered for your activities within the scope of the duties and responsibilities for the training program. It is an occurrence policy. Coverage is at least $1 million per occurrence and $3 million annual aggregate.
Prepaid professional liability insurance in the form of occurrence coverage is provided by the OSU Self-Insurance Program.
All residents are off either Christmas or New Years Day. All residents receive three weeks of vacation per year. In addition, each resident is given a week for an educational conference each year.
Education and Travel Allowance:
The Department of Emergency Medicine provides a $1000 educational and travel allowance per year for the second, third, fourth, and fifth years of residency.
Some staff begins accruing sick leave
benefit hours upon employment. This benefit gives the resident full pay for up to the total number of hours accrued. Full-time employees (100 percent) accrue 120 hours of sick leave per year. Appointments of less than 100 percent accrue at a pro-rated amount according to the time actually worked. No moonlighting while on sick leave is permitted.
Personal Leave: Personal leave
is permitted for extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the program director with input from the leadership of the departments at both hospitals. The amount of leave, however, must stay within the requirements set by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), in order to maintain eligibility to take the written exam and Residents should understand that ABIM regulations mandate that any leave (including sick leave, vacation, maternity/paternity or FMLA leave) in excess of one month per year be made up prior to advancing to the next stage of training.
Any resident who is pregnant will be allowed six weeks of maternity leave
. If medically necessary, more leave will be granted. However, if the combination of maternity leave and vacations is in excess of eight weeks in any year of training, the training time will need to be extended in order to meet eligibility requirements to take the written ABEM and ABIM exams.
A paternity leave
of up to three weeks duration is available to any new father including adoptive parents. This will count toward the total leave allowable.
Adoptive mothers, fathers and domestic partners may take a paid parental leave
of three weeks at full pay. The leave must be used within one year of the adoption of the child and is used in conjunction with Family Medical Leave (FML) to the extent possible. Adoptive mothers may be eligible to use sick leave, vacation, compensatory time, and leave without pay for the remainder of the FML. Adoptive fathers and adoptive parents may be eligible to use vacation, compensatory time or leave without pay for the remainder of the FML. Use of vacation leave or comp time is at the discretion of the employee and subject to departmental approval.
Resident Call Suite:
Our call suite is complete with lounge, classrooms, vending area, computer lab, and private sleeping quarters. Each sleeping room has a computer, desk, phone, television and bathroom.
Funding for meals is provided for residents and Fellows on in-house or home call. There also is an after-hours dining area available from 11 p.m.-6 a.m. daily for use by residents and Fellows on call.
Lab Coats and Dry Cleaning:
Residents and Fellows are provided with two white Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center lab coats each year of training. Lab coats and work-related clothing may be dry cleaned at no charge throughout training.
Smart Phone Reimbursement:
Housestaff members in their first and fourth years at OSUWMC are eligible for an Apple iPod Touch or Apple iPhone.
The Department of Emergency Medicine provides "A" parking permits for all of our house staff each year.
Discounted fitness club memberships are available through the OSU Center for Wellness and Prevention
and the Recreation and Physical Activity Center
. In addition, many athletic facilities, and individual, team, and tournament sports, are available across the campus through the Recreational Sports program.
Library and Learning Resources:
The Health Sciences Library
is located next to the Medical Center. Overall, The Ohio State University has 27 libraries. The Medical Center houses a learning center for residents with PCs, laser printers and free access to the Internet.
All residents and Fellows are provided with memberships in the Columbus Medical Association (CMA)
, Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA)
, and American Medical Association (AMA)
while in an Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center training program. The Department of Emergency Medicine provides membership in ACEP

. The Department of Internal Medicine pays for ACP
membership (with subscriptions to the Annals of Internal Medicine and the ACP Journal Club) for all interns.
Moonlighting is permitted by the State of Ohio after completing the Internship year and obtaining a permanent Ohio medical license and DEA number. All such activities must be approved by the Residency Director. In addition several internal moonlighting opportunities are available starting in the 2nd year.
Residents have had access to purchase tickets for Buckeye football and basketball to some games.
Counseling and Support:
The program director and associate medical director will provide an opportunity for counseling or consultation referral related to personal problems that arise out of the trainee's participation in the program or that could affect your ability to perform your professional duties.

Confidential counseling services for Ohio State employees and their families experiencing distress.
Department of Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Care:
Chaplains assist patients, families and Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center physicians and staff in meeting spiritual and emotional needs. Sanctuary and meditation rooms are located throughout the hospital. A Chaplain is on call 24 hours per day and can be reached through the hospital operator.
